Why I'm glad I married a BYU Fan...

While I am not the primary contributer to this here blog, I feel the need to give my input from time to time. The truth is that Melissa's posts and creativity far surpass mine, so it seems fruitless to try to compete with that. Yet, there are those rare moments that I have an idea that I would like to share with the millions (dare I say billions) of our faithful blog readers.

I couldn't wait for the BYU-SDSU game on Wednesday. In addition to me being a big BYU fan, my cousin Jackson Emery plays on the team, so it was also a family matter for me. My excitement for the game, however, was stifled by the fact that I had committed to help with interpretation that night at the Conference Center so I would be missing a huge chunk of the game. Nevertheless, I was stoked!

Melissa probably got annoyed with my constant mention of the game and how bummed I was that I wasn't able to go or watch it. But, as I sat at work on Wednesday, to my delight I received the following picture via email:

Needless to say, it made my whole day and it didn't seem that bad that I would only catch part of the game.

Fast forward to Wednesday night. The interpretation event started late, had numerous technical difficulties and as a result went an hour over time. As soon as I was done, I dashed to my car and turned the radio on just in time to hear that Jackson had stolen the ball and had taken it down for a dunk. For the ten minutes driving home, I was totally enthralled at the close game and wished I was there. When I got home, I expected to find Melissa asleep or getting ready for bed, but to my surprise, I found her poised on the edge of the bed wearing her BYU shirt listening to the BYU game on the radio. The first thing that came out of her mouth was, "This is the craziest game ever! Can you believe it!?"

I was so stoked, I responded, "I know it!!!" We ended up eating cake and listening to the rest of the game together and basking in the glory of the cougars big W. The night was perfect. Not only did my cougars win, but I got to experience it with my true-blue-byu-fan of a wife. Nothing could be better!

(Needless to say that on Feb 26th when the Cougs meet the Aztecs again, I'm not doing an interpretation!)

In honor of last nights amazing game...

...some adorable pictures of us imposing our biases on our child.

Thompson tried to act all cool at first, but actually got way into the game.  He was pretty nervous there for a while during an intense first half.

But in the end he couldn't hide his excitement when #9 BYU beat #4 SDSU 71 to 58.

Go Cougars!

Two child actors, both named Trevor Wright.

Friday night we watched The Social Network. I think what made the movie for us was this:

The B. U. Guy in Bra was masterfully acted by Trevor Wright. It's not just the coincidence of his name being the same as Trevor's that makes it awesome. It's the history behind the two Trevor Wrights (which was documented so well and so sarcastically by the beloved Mitch Mallory in Schooled Magazine).

It's not known by many, but Trevor (my husband Trevor) was for a short time a child actor. His extensive and prolific career included such roles in Kirtland visitor center movie (the back of his legs are shown), an episode of the TV show Everwood (he was cut out), and some random boy in a BYU Production called "Call of a Story" (neither of us have even seen this). His most famous role was boy #2 in the Disney Channel original movie, The Luck of the Irish.

His friend told me this before we started dating, and I think I said yes when Trevor asked me out because I wanted to date a Disney Channel original movie star. Or a Disney Channel original movie extra, whatever you want to call it. And that was before I knew he still gets royalties from it. His Oscar-nominated performance is below. Skip ahead to 9:13 and 9:36.

One time in high school after his acting career had ended, he and his friends decided to google his name because I guess there isn't that much to do in Alpine or something. Anyways, they found that there was another, slightly more famous actor named Trevor Wright. This Trevor Wright had made it big as a child actor, landing a coveted role in MXP: Most Xtreme Primate. Isn't it every child actor's dream to star in a movie with an animal who can do something usually only humans can do?

Because this Trevor Wright seemed pretty awesome and into himself, with his own fan page and everything, they checked out his roles on imdb.com and discovered that Trevor Wright was taking credit for being in The Luck of the Irish. So being the bored high schoolers that they were, they called up Trevor Wright's agent and, pretending to be an agent themselves, threatened legal action if he didn't stop taking credit for my husband's hard work as boy #2.

For a long time my husband and his friends joked about the other Trevor Wright and the imdb incident. Until one day when they were up at the Sundance Film Festival and actually saw Trevor Wright. Not only did they go up to talk to him, but they told him how they were such big fans and how they loved his work in MXP and asked if they could get a picture with him. From the slightly confused/freaked out look on his face, I don't think he was used to being a.) recognized as someone famous, b.) having fans, or c.) taking pictures with strangers who claimed to be fans. I think all this was new to him, despite having his own fan page and everything.

So when we saw that the B. U. guy in Bra was Trevor Wright, we were happy that his acting career has continued to thrive. Too bad my husband didn't continue acting. Because then maybe he could have been an extra in a movie that actually played in theaters. And because then maybe he could have a fan page like this:

If you don't believe this breath-taking story of the two Trevors, here is the Schooled magazine article:

Curry and Naans and Why Garbanzo Beans Don't Belong in Desserts.

Trevor and I are big fans of Indian food. Trevor ate it quite a bit on his mission and then he introduced me to all the joys of southeast asian food when we were first married. So Sunday night we decided to make our own little Indian feast.

We made a chicken cashew curry. It doesn't look very good, but it was so delicious. Anyone who likes curry should make this.  We added coconut milk instead of yogurt and extra whole cashews to increase the level of goodness.

We also got wild and tried our hand at naan making. They were garlicky and buttery and awesome.

Trevor was the master naan maker.

Even if some of his naans were a little funny shaped, they were still as good as any Indian place.

To counteract all the coconut milk and cashews and butter and carbs from dinner, I decided to try a recipe for "healthy" cupcakes that I found the other day. The recipe claimed they were light, moist, and  as delicious as regular old unhealthy cupcakes. They came out looking great.

And then we tasted them. They were moist. They were light. And they were disgusting. We both kept eating bites of them trying to convince ourselves they were ok. And then the nasty aftertaste caught up with us, and we realized that all these cupcakes did was make us want real cupcakes more. We were sad that they weren't a healthy and incredibly delicious treat. We shouldn't have expected much though since garbanzo beans was the main ingredient.

So we made chocolate, almond, and toffee cookies instead. They didn't have garbanzo beans in them, they were in no way healthy, and they were actually good.

And the whole time Thompson just enjoyed his favorite hang out spot in the kitchen, his bouncer.

Where did my tiny newborn go?

Our tiny newborn is no more. He has been replaced by a little human. A chubby little human.

Here he is at about 2 weeks old and under 5 lbs.

Here he is now at 3 months and over 12 lbs.

Is that even the same baby? I hadn't realized how much he really has changed until I compared those pictures.

I kind of miss my tiny little newborn. He slept a lot. He never really cried. He snored and squeaked and grunted a lot.

But I also love my baby boy that is big and smiley and fun. He sleeps a lot less. He cries a lot more. He coos and whines and talks all the time. And he is changing everyday too.

Here are some new developments in the life of Thompson:

-He is starting to be entertained by toys instead of just mom and dad, which makes life a little easier for mom and dad.

-He sleeps through the night, which makes life a lot easier for mom and dad.

-He is vocalizing like crazy and loves having little conversations with us.

-He gets more and more smiley every day but has to be tricked into smiling for the camera.

-He likes to be goofy.

-He is starting to figure out that his hand is part of his own body and loves sucking on it.

-He has developed this weird habit of almost always having his right arm sticking out with his hand in a fist. Is that normal?

And some things that have never changed about our little guy.

-He has always loved cuddling, especially when he is tired.

-He has always loved looking intently at people and the world around him. One of the things he has always loved best is looking at the airplanes above his changing table.

-And he has always loved looking unbelievably cute.

Christmas Fun

We had a great Christmas this year in Utah. It was our (my) first ever in Utah. And our first ever with a baby.

The day before Christmas Eve we opened presents from my parents. We even skyped them so they could see Thompson open his presents. Which was great because he was so excited about the whole ordeal.

So excited he slept right thought it all, despite our best efforts to force some sort of response/interest.

On Christmas Eve we went down to Alpine to spend a few days with Trevor's family. Thompson was about as excited to open Christmas presents there as he was at our house. But he looked pretty cute in his Christmas PJs.

He did enjoy his new presents once they were all opened though.

The rest of Christmas Day we went to both of Trevor's Grandparents. Thompson got to meet his great-great-grandma Emery, which is crazy because I only really knew one of my great-grandparents, let alone great-great-grandparents. She is 98 years old and loved holding Thompson.

More family fun and togetherness. My personal favorite is the one of Trevor's brother wearing his new snowboarding ninja suit. Which is actually called a ninja suit and comes in a chinese take out box.

And it wouldn't be Christmas without some Anne-Geddes-style-using-your-child-as-a-prop-which-may-also-be-considered-child-abuse pictures, right? Look at that face. Pleading for help. Asking why we would ever do this to him for our own amusement.

Unfortunately the abuse didn't stop with the stocking. But doesn't he make a cute present?

More Christmas cuteness of the less traumatic variety.
