Spring Breaking and Tulip Festivaling

A few weeks ago Trevor's students had spring break, which meant he got to take spring break too. He also had finished up another semester of his graduate program and had some time before spring term started, so he was both school-less and work-less for the week. It was pretty much an amazing week full of doing nothing but spending time together. I want spring break to be every week.

On one of the days when the weather was actually semi-spring like, we went down to the Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point. We had been 2 years ago together but we thought it would be fun to take the little child this year.

It was still a little chilly and a some of the tulips hadn't bloomed yet because of how cold it had been, but it was at least sunny and there were still tulips aplenty. We also had lunch at the cafe there, which had some really delicious food. Grilled cheese sandwich with avocado, tomato, and goat cheese. Yum.

Thompson loved being outside too. When he is in a new place, he is really good because he is so fascinated by new things that he just quietly takes it all in. And when he is outside, there is a whole lot of newness to take in.

Some more tulip festivaling goodness:

Could this boy be any sweeter?

Seriously, he is the sweetest little boy. Every morning he greets me with the biggest smiles and snuggles. Unless he gets too tired or hungry, he is a happy wiggly little goof.

Adding to the happiness of all 3 of us - his bottom teeth finally popped through! I feel like he has been teething for a few months, so a few weeks ago when we first noticed a tooth coming through we were pretty relieved. The second one showed up just this last week. I am going to miss his gummy smile, but I think a smile with two little teeth showing is going to be pretty cute too.

Food. Real Food.

Thompson has been eating real food for a while now. And by eating I mean sloshing the food around his mouth hoping some of it actually gets down. And by real food I mean liquidy pureed stuff. Still, exciting news for a 6 month old. Well, it is exciting now.

Our first attempt at giving him solids was met with complete disinterest and boredom. He just was not into the whole rice cereal thing. I tried for a week to get him to like it, but he would never really eat it. He was taste it, then spit it right out. Or hold it in his cheeks then smile as it all came back out.

So we moved on to other foods, which he has liked approximately 1 million times better. He loves sweet potatoes and squash. He really loves sweet potatoes with cinnamon. He is a pro at eating his oatmeal. Green beans gave him the shivers (literally) whenever he ate them at first, but he is getting used to them now. He likes them the best mixed with white sweet potatoes though.

Since he was doing so well with his veggies and oatmeal, I thought I would introduce a little fruit as a treat for him. So I mixed in some mashed up banana with his oatmeal, and this is how he rewarded me:

Apparently bananas aren't really his thing, because he either spits them out or looks at me with the "why mom, why would you put this in my mouth?" look. He seems to tolerate them with a little sweet potatoes or oatmeal mixed in, but he really doesn't like them.

With the little guy starting to eat all this food, I have been on a bit of a baby food making kick of late. Because I would never feed my child food from a jar, and he will only be eating homemade organic food for his entire life. Just kidding. I am not crazy. I am just cheap. And those little overpriced jars of baby food are not. It is even easier and more inexpensive to make baby food than I realized, too. So now we have a freezer full of frozen little food cubes, and this is what dinner time looks like for Thompson.

Although we had a slow start with the rice cereal, Thompson loves eating now. He gets excited whenever I get him ready and put his bib on, and opens his mouth waiting for us to stick food in it.

He also is becoming more and more interested in what we are eating and drinking, and loves when we let him take sips of water from a cup. And much to my dismay, he has learned how fun it is to make a mess and play while eating. These activities include, but are not limited to, sucking on his hands while he has a mouthful of food, sucking on his feet while he has a mouthful of food, blowing bubbles while he has a mouthful of food, and talking up a storm with a mouthful of food. I would be mad at him if he wasn't so cute when he did all this.

On a completely unrelated note, I think I need to give my child a hair cut soon. How does one go about giving a 6 month old a hair cut?

Adventures of a 6 month old.

Some adventures in the life of our cute little man...

- Learning how to roll from his tummy to his back. Forgetting how to roll from his tummy to his back. Learning how to roll from his back to his tummy. Getting mad that he gets stuck on his tummy after rolling over from his back and whining until someone comes and helps him, especially early in the morning when when he (and we) are supposed to still be asleep.

- Meeting his great grandpa and grandma Cannon for the first time.

- Getting to see and fall in love with his Uncle Jonathan and Grandma Davis again.

- Becoming increasingly wiggly. Deciding it isn't cool to hold still.

- Realizing there are a million ways he can look cute and goofy at the same time.

- Getting his first bad cold. Getting extra snuggly during said cold. Realizing he hates having his nose suctioned out more than anything else in this mortal existence.

- A discovery of increased flexibility...and the existence of toes.

- Enjoying the spring-like weather outside when the weather actually decides to be spring-like.

-Realizing that food doesn't have to come from a bottle and doesn't have to be milk.

-Realizing that real food isn't always that great.

- Finding out that drinking water from a cup can be the most exciting thing ever.

- Knowing you can get away with anything when you are this cute.
